Economic Development Committee
“Bear Valley Economic Partnership”
1) Business Development – focuses on increasing economic stability and prosperity in the Big Bear Valley by primarily filling in the gaps of the local economy. The group’s underlying principals are to increase business expansion, retention and attraction. Business attraction efforts should build on local strengths and/or complement the existing business base. Strategies to achieve the groups goals are to attract new, non-tourist based businesses, expand local-based businesses, increase low-season events, attract the convention and seminar industry and create a destination location to expand tourism into the midweek. The business development group works in coordination with the other subcommittees of the Economic Development Committee.

2) Social Services – focuses on providing adequate housing and social infrastructure. The group anticipates and addresses the housing and social service needs of all Big Bear residents to ensure that employees of local businesses have convenient access to housing and services they can afford, and that long-standing residents can remain in their communites. Specific strategies include the provision of affordable and transitional housing, establishment of a one-stop service center for public services such as health, social security and the DMV, and the provision of adequate child care and health services.

3) Education – focuses on building a competitive workforce through localized training by linking industry with education. The group’s strategy is to develop a partnership with businesses, city and county to fill the gaps in educational and county institutions.

4) Recreation – focuses on attracting non-tourist based business while providing increased recreational opportunities for the community. The group’s strategy is the build a sports complex with high altitude training center, swimming and outdoor recreational facilities.

5) Transportation – focuses on improving traffic flow during busy periods, with the least impact on local businesses and residents. The group’s strategy is to provide visitor’s with better information, encourage the use of alternate routes, construct new bridge and implement MARTA trolley service.

6) Planning – focuses on obtaining and maintaining various demographic information to better understand our current economic bases. Specific strategies include identifying undeveloped parcels and thus growth potential, tracking real estate values, determining school populations and thus future labor force populations, obtaining crime statistics and developing other statistical data as needed.

7) Funding – focuses on assessing funding resources to assist subcommittees in achieving specific strategic actions.
